Genesis 49 is both family speech and tribal horizon. Jacob addresses his sons one by one with words that mix character, consequence, geography and future expectation, then returns to the family burial place before his death.
Jacob gathers his sons and begins with words for Reuben, Simeon and Levi before turning to Judah, whose section expands into imagery of leadership, lion strength and abundance.
