Enter the ark
Genesis 7 opens with the completed ark still on dry ground. Noah is told to enter with his whole household because he has been seen as righteous in his generation.

The ark closes and the floodwaters rise in four visual scenes.
Genesis 7 moves from a final command to enter the ark, through the boarding of Noah’s household and the animals, into the sudden beginning of the flood and finally to waters that prevail over the landscape for 150 days. Genesis 7:6–10
They entered before the waters
Noah is six hundred years old when the floodwaters come on the earth. He enters the ark with his wife, his sons and their wives, and the text again names clean animals, animals that are not clean, birds and everything that moves on the ground.

The flood begins
Genesis marks the start of the flood with unusual precision: the year of Noah’s life, the month and the day are named. Then the language becomes cosmic.

The waters prevailed
The flood is now described through scale and duration. For forty days the waters increase until they lift the ark above the earth.

The first scene is still dry: the ark is finished and Noah receives the final entry instructions. The second is a boarding scene, with household and animals moving inside before the water arrives. The third begins the catastrophe itself and ends with Noah shut in. Only the fourth shows the waters at their overwhelming extent. This sequence prevents the familiar ark image from flattening an entire chapter whose visual state changes dramatically from one section to the next.
