The first audience with Pharaoh does not produce freedom. Instead, he treats the request as evidence of idleness and makes brick production harder. The burden falls on workers and foremen, and by the end of the chapter even Moses is asking why his mission seems to have made suffering worse.
Moses and Aaron tell Pharaoh that Israel’s God commands a festival in the wilderness. Pharaoh refuses, says he does not know Yahweh and accuses the people of being distracted from their work.
